A Message from Mitchell's Parents...

Shortly after our son was born, we began to notice that Mitchell preferred to look and sleep with his head to the same side. Within a month, we started to see his head begin to flatten on one side. At each doctor visit, we discussed the flatness of Mitchell's head and the tightness of his neck muscles. We did positional techniques to encourage him to turn his head and to take the pressure off the flat side of his head. At each visit, Mitchell's pediatrician reassured us that his head and neck would gradually correct itself.

By the age of six months, Mitchell's head was severely flattened, his ear had shifted, and his facial features were becoming abnormal. At this time, Mitchell's pediatrician referred him for physical therapy and to CCHS Rehabilitation Center to discuss a cranial remolding orthosis. At first, we were very concerned about Mitchell wearing such a device. After hearing about the effects if left untreated and the benefits if worn, we made the decision to give the cranial remolding orthosis a try. We made an appointment at CCHS Rehabilitation Center for Mitchell's initial visit. They took photographs, measurements, and a cast of his head. Within two weeks, the STARlight Cranial helmet arrived and Mitchell began to wear it. He quickly adjusted to wearing the STARlight and showed very little discomfort. We were able to decorate the STARlight with stickers to make it more personable.

Mitchell began to receive physical therapy twice a week for the tightness of his neck muscles called torticollis. We received exercises to do at home every day. Within two months, Mitchell had made dramatic gains with his range of motion, and the improvement in the torticollis also had a positive effect on Mitchell's orthotic treatment.

We had regular visits to see Carrie Beets, CO at CCHS to adjust the STARlight and to monitor the changes. We quickly began to see wonderful improvements in Mitchell's head!

After seeing the improvements the STARlight has made, the whole process has been worth all the time and energy that it involved. We have been very pleased with the changes that the STARlight has made for our son. We would definitely recommend a cranial remolding orthosis to any parent considering it for their child.
