The
Clarren Helmet Cranial Remolding Orthosis
The
Clarren Helmet from Orthomerica is a custom cranial remolding orthosis
used to treat mild to severe deformational plagiocephaly, brachycephaly
and other head shape deformities in infants 6-18 months of age. This design
was created by Sterling Clarren MD, who published the first study in 1979
on the use of a cranial remolding orthosis to manage head shape deformities
in infants with plagiocephaly and torticollis. The orthosis can be used
for non-operative or for post-operative indications. Application and removal
of the orthosis is facilitated by the looser fit, making it a good solution
for protection, continued remolding post-operatively or over a shunt.

The
Clarren Helmet can be fabricated from a positive modified cast, unmodified
cast, or a scan of the infant's head using the STARscanner. |
| |
The
Clarren Helmet provides total contact over the prominent areas of
the skull and leaves a void over the flattened areas to facilitate
more normal skull symmetry. |
| |
Treatment
generally takes 3-4 months, but varies depending on the patient's
age and severity of cranial asymmetry. |
| |
Clinical
consultation is available through Orthomerica's staff of ABC certified
orthotists. |
| |
STARband
literature is available for practitioners, referring physicians, patient
families, and caregivers. |
