Hip Orthoses
Orthotic Management of Hip Dislocation Using a Newport™ 4 Hip Orthosis
Authors: Dulcey Lima, CO, OTR/L
Subject: This article reviews the skeletal anatomy of the hip joint, and explains factors that predispose the hip to dislocation. Posterior and anterior dislocations are discussed, with specific recommendations for joint range of motion, type of hip joint, and orthotic design. The article reinforces the premise that orthotic management of the hip should provide control in positions where the hip is most vulnerable to posterior dislocation (sitting, squatting, leaning over more than 90 degress) without compromising function during walking and standing activities.
