We have been pleased with the addition of the STARscanner in treating our patients in need of cranial reshaping helmets. Before the installation of the scanner, we would schedule 2 hours for the evaluation, discussion with family, casting and modification of the mold. Since we have started using the scanner we have shortened this appointment to 1 hour! Before we had the STARscanner, we were not always able to modify the mold and ship it to the manufacture in a timely manner. Now, the orthosis is fabricated by Orthomerica and the patient is fit within two weeks of the scanning date. Parents who have gone through both procedures (casting and scanning) have said, "Is that it? The scan was so fast and clean!" They are also very impressed with the documentation of their child's head shape that the STARscanner provides, compared to before when only photos and a malleable lead strip were used to get the shape. Porth, C.P.O. The STARscanner has revolutionized the approach to cranial remolding for NSPP (Non Synostic Deformational Plagiocephaly) at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. In fact, it has become foundational to our Cranial Remolding Program. The parental stress level during the measurement process appears to be markedly reduced, compared with our experience with traditional casting. Babies definitely cry less. Physicians and parents are impressed with the comparative scans, and can easily monitor changes in head shape. The STARscanner has eliminated the need for technician support within our O&P Department, and this staff can be allocated more effectively. Janet
Lombardo, C.P.O. The STARscanner has been the single most important clinical tool for the treatment of Deformational Plagiocephaly. From the beginning, the STARscanner has made its mark in the Houston medical community. The scan takes about one second. The data gathered is accurate. Mother and fathers no longer cry with their hysterical children for 20-30 minutes. There is no huge mess. This is just one very important aspect of the scanner. With the cranial comparison utility, I have witnessed Cranial Facial Surgeons' jaws hit the floor when they actually see the mapping of multiple scans superimposed. The measurement calibration is exact to the millimeter. Payer groups, insurance companies, and case managers can actually see the benefits. It is not subjective hocus pocus, but true measurements on a Cartesian coordinate system. The math does not hide or mask any imperfections. We are able to track the child's progress as often as necessary. Families, children, and the entire healthcare team benefit from the STARscanner. It is cutting-edge technology. The benefits are real and the cost is reasonable. I can offer my services for much less than I ever could with the traditional casting methods. Given a choice, the parents and the well-informed physician groups recognize and appreciate the scanner over any other methods. It is a complete success story for everyone involved. John
